Canon Digital Drive System for portable lens (Digital Drive Unit) Digital Drive
Canon has been heavily involved with Digital techniques since the introduction of our DIGISUPER Studio/Field lenses in 1995. Our expertise has grown steadily since then with exceptional sales of the DIGISUPER lenses thanks to great customer acceptance. Today, Canon is taking that experience and adapting it to our line of portable SDTV and HDTV lenses with useful digital features, we call the new technology Digital Drive.

As the leader in digital electronic technology for lenses, Canon is providing tools based upon our advance technology that will fill many needs. These useful digital tools will not only help our customers with today's production requirements, they will be ready to handle future requirements not yet conceived by the cameraman.

In addition to the useful tools that the new Digital Drive provides, this new drive unit also improves several basic functions of portable lenses. For example, both the maximum servo zoom speed and servo focus speed have improved specifications not possible in earlier designs.

SHUTTLE SHOT
By memorizing any two focal lengths, the Digital Drive can automatically "shuttle" between the two points at its highest speed, moving in either direction. If the full telephoto focal length is one of the two points, this function can also be used as a tool to quickly check focus and then zoom back to the original starting point.

SPEED PRESET
A specific zoom speed can be preset in memory and it is possible to repeat the zoom speed as often as you like by pushing a simple button. This is useful when a production requires the same zoom speed repeatedly, such as an interview program.

FRAMING PRESET
An Angle of view can be preset in memory and the lens will zoom to that position by pushing a simple button. During a performance, framing preset will reproduce the zoom position decided upon at the rehearsal. It`s easy to repeat the same zoom as often as you like at the highest speed or in a preset zoom speed.

Ergonomic Design and Ease of Use
It may seem that all of the added functions made available by Digital Drive will cause confusion to the cameraperson. On the contrary, the digital functions have become "Useful" by having only one memory button on the drive unit. If you have a production requirement where you will be shooting several different scenes, each function can easily be set up by the use of on/off dipswitches.

PC Connection
Using the Digital communication interface on the lens and an associated Dip switch, a personal computer can be connected to the lens. By using optional software, a personal computer system can be used for remote diagnostics of the lens.

New D-Series Demand for Digital Drive
In addition, Canon is introducing a new Zoom Demand for Digital Drive, the ZSD-300D. The new demand will be able to operate the Shuttle Shot (Shtl), Speed Preset, and Frame Preset (F.P) functions. The ZSD-300D will be connected to the lens via a new one-touch 20-pin connector. All current analog controllers are compatible with Digital Drive lenses.

Studio / Field Lens Digital Demands (Applicable for IASD type Lens)
By using an adapter cable, it is possible to use the Studio/Field digital lens controllers on Digital Drive portable lenses while maintaining the useful Digital Drive functions. (There is some limitation to the new digital functions)
