Addressing the Challenge of a "Deeper Black"
Black is a color that highlights the strength of this camera as a tool intended for pros. With the PowerShot G1 X, the design team developed an even deeper black in order to create a more impressive linear design.
Generally, black appears deeper when given a glossy finish. However, to create a deeper black with a sense of luxury, the design team discovered that a "wet matte" texture fills the role.
Mr. Shinata tried a variety of formulations in order to achieve the conflicting demands of increased gloss with minimal luster. The appearance of a black finish can change significantly with even a slight difference in formulations. From the myriad of choices available, he chose the formulation that gave the appearance of the richest black and emphasized the texture of the planes and the linear appearance by applying the paint directly to the surface of the metal.
He decided to use the same paint on both plastic and metal parts with the goal of unifying the texture. For this reason, he rigorously tested the paint foundation to ensure consistency.
Committed to Maximum Utility
The design team also actively addressed the need to develop accessories that enable this professional-quality tool to accommodate a variety of user situations.
The new dedicated soft case incorporates leather with a glossy finish as well as an embossed pattern that presents an image of informality. For the shape, they designed a full-fledged soft case within the constraints of the Vari-angle LCD.
For the lens cap, the design team tested several designs that take into account the body and the way it is used when a hood is mounted. As part of their commitment to offer a truly professional camera, they developed a thoroughly tested waterproof case that accommodates typical usage patterns as well as the positions of all levers and buttons of various shapes and sizes.
An Innovative New Tool
Performance innovations result in design innovations. This is not a novel concept; throughout the history of Canon, both performance and design have served as wellsprings of innovation.
However, it is not the case that innovations are always considered radical in nature. Rather, innovation carries with it a degree of excitement and satisfaction. This exactly mirrors the case of previous cameras noted for their groundbreaking approach.
The PowerShot G1 X was created from just such an excellent design, with a classic yet novel appearance and a smart yet dignified presence, all embodied in a practical yet artistic instrument. Indeed, this camera marks a new era of innovation in a pro tool.
