Concept of development
Canon has released a total of 8 models in the IXY DIGITAL series, including the
first "IXY DIGITAL" released in spring 2000, through the "IXY DIGITAL
30" released in spring 2003.
The IXY DIGITAL series has been a longtime bestseller model for over 3 years,
gaining high popularity among a broad range of users regardless of age or sex.
The IXY DIGITAL L (Photo 1) is a new model that aims to represent the next-generation
IXY DIGITAL with the following development concepts: |
| • |
A more refined and stylish digital camera while retaining
the IXY DIGITAL series concept |
|
Feature 1: New compact design with high-quality body
High-quality, stylish design
While retaining the basic "Box & Circle" design concept of the IXY
DIGITAL series, the IXY DIGITAL L, as the first model of the next generation of
the IXY DIGITAL cameras, employs new materials (aluminum-magnesium alloys) and
vertically oriented shape (approx. aspect ration of 2:1).
Furthermore, its stainless-steel side cover creates a quality feel and ensures
the body's robustness. Color variations that bring out the best
of the materials
For the first time in Canon digital cameras, the IXY DIGITAL L comes in four colors:
Platinum Silver, Piano Black, Pearl White, and Satin Bronze.
Typically, colorization of the camera body is achieved by the surface coating.
The IXY DIGITAL L, however, applies different surface processing suitable for
each color, creating a totally different high-grade look from traditional colored
models.
Each color's surface processing is as follows:
|
| • Platinum Silver |
Dense hairline finish (high density) |
| • Piano Black |
High-gloss buff finish on the front and blast finish on the back |
| • Pearl White |
Polarized pearl coating finish |
| • Satin Bronze |
Coarse hairline finish (low density) |
|
Ultrahigh-density packaging technology realizes
more compact body
The IXY DIGITAL L employs a host of cutting edge mounting technologies including
the double-sided CSP-IC mounting, and fewer circuit boards was reduced by reexamining
the parts configuration. Despite featuring a 4.0-megapixel CCD, it has achieved
a very compact body of only about 79cc volume with a weight of about 100g.
SD Memory Card supported
Following the IXY DIGITAL 30, the IXY DIGITAL L also adopts the SD memory card.
Thanks to SD Memory Card's compact, postage stamp size (24mm x 32mm x 2.1mm),
it significantly contributes to the compactness of the camera body.
The estimated number (time) of images can be captured using the bundled 32MB SD
Memory Card is shown in Table 1.

Compact Li-ion battery and dedicated battery charger
To further promote compactness, the IXY DIGITAL L uses the same battery pack,
NB-3L, as the IXY DIGITAL 30. This, together with the camera's energy-efficient
design, makes the IXY DIGITAL L capable of capturing approximately 190 images
with a fully charged battery.
The battery charger is also compact, yet it charges the battery in about 95 minutes.
Ultra-compact, highly-efficient and reliable built-in light guide flash
1.5" low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD monitor (100% image coverage)
with thin, low power consumption backlight
Feature 2: High image quality
CCD sensors with approximately 4.0 million effective pixels
The IXY DIGITAL L features a smaller CCD than conventional 4 megapixel models.
Together with the adoption of primary color filter, the camera produces a high-quality
image of up to 2,272 x 1,704 pixels.
High-resolution single-focal length lens
The IXY DIGITAL L is equipped with a 39mm (in 35mm film format) single-focal length
lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The lens consists of four air-spaced elements.
An aspherical element ensures good aberration compensation. Furthermore, by using
high-refraction glass, the lens is an ultra-compact optical system.
High-quality image processing with DIGIC, Digital Imaging Processor
The IXY DIGITAL L incorporates Canon's proprietary DIGIC digital imaging processor,
for its signal processing.
With an improved algorithm optimized for digital cameras, DIGIC achieves higher
image quality, more precise autofocus (AF) and faster processing speed as well
as lower power consumption.
High-speed AF and precise AE/AWB based on iSAPS technology
The IXY DIGITAL L features iSAPS technology which analyzes and predicts the scene
just before the image is made based on the statistical analysis on user's shooting
conditions using the vast amount of photographic data Canon had accumulated over
the years of camera development.
As a result, the camera has faster, more precise AF, AE and Auto White Balance
(AWB) than ever before.
Precise white balance with five preset positions and manual adjustment
Wide range of ISO equivalent speed settings including the high image quality ISO
50
Feature 3: Advanced functions and comfortable operation
Quick Shot function
The IXY DIGITAL L comes with a Quick Shot function.
Normally, an autofocus mechanism calculates the focal distance while detecting
the contrast of the subject when the shutter button is pressed halfway, thus attaining
extremely accurate focusing. However, if the shutter button is jabbed down all
the way without stopping it halfway first there is a bit of a time lag between
fully pressing the shutter button and the exposure starting, because the calculation
must be performed.
The Quick Shot function of the IXY DIGITAL L makes full use of iSAPS technology
and new algorithm for its metering method, enabling the user to activate the shutter
almost immediately without time lag by fully pressing without stopping halfway
(see Fig. 1).

Super macro shooting mode
The Super Macro mode allows the user to focus as close as 3cm from the photographed
subject (measured from the tip of the lens). The shooting area when using this
mode is 24 x 18mm.
Normal focusing has also become much more convenient, allowing the user to focus
on subjects as close as 10cm. Simple user interface with minimum
number of buttons
There are only four controls on the back of the IXY DIGITAL L: the omniselector;
the function (set) button; the menu button; the mode switch. They are functionally
arranged (Photo 2). |

Clock Display mode
The IXY DIGITAL L incorporates Clock Display mode (see Fig. 2), which shows the
time on the LCD monitor when the user holds the SET button in shooting mode.
This enables the user to easily ascertain the rough interval between shot as well
as the current time. |

Mute mode
The IXY DIGITAL L comes with Mute mode. From the MENU, turning Beep Off disables
all sounds except for the warning sound. This permits the user to shoot readily
even in locations where silence is imperative.
5-point AiAF with selectable 1-point AF
Three light metering modes
Movie recording with audio and replay function (max. 3 min.)
Color Effect modes
Shutter speed of 15 to 1/1500 seconds with noise reduction
Histogram display of playback image
Enlarged display of image for easy confirmation
Digital zoom with continuous variation of angle of view
Twelve image quality modes
LCD monitor Display Off mode
ON/OFF selection of AF-assist Beam
Self timer (2 or 10 seconds)
International user interface (UI) supporting twelve languages
Feature 4: Digital communication
Direct prints with dedicated printers
The IXY DIGITAL L supports direct printing, enabling the user to print out high-quality
images by simply connecting the cameras to the CP-300/200/100/10 Card Photo Printers
or direct printing compatible Bubble Jet printers using the dedicated cable. Operation
is easily controlled from the camera.
Compatible with PictBridge new industry standard
The IXY DIGITAL L supports PictBridge standard established in February 2003. This
enables the direct printing from any PictBridge-compatible printer regardless
of the manufacturer.
Compatible with the Exif Print standard
Features "My Camera" function
Bundled with a comprehensive package of software applications
Access to "Canon Image Gateway (CIG)" on the Web (Available
only in Japanese)
Compatible with USB Interface
Feature 5: Accessories
All Weather Case submersible to 3 meters
As an option, the All Weather Case is available (Photo 3). By limiting its submersion
depth to 3 meters, the case is smaller and lighter, allowing users to conveniently
use it at the beach or on the ski slopes. |
