Concept of development
The EOS-1D Mark II N (Photo 1) is a top-of-the line professional digital AF SLR camera offering higher performance and enhanced features suggested by the EOS-1D Mark II users. The development concept of the new product is as follows:

High image quality, high-speed, quick response
High image quality and high-speed shooting (8.2-megapixels, 8.5fps) inherited from the EOS-1D Mark II.
The Picture Style function provides optimal images for the photographer's purposes and desired effects.

Improved features suggested by professionals
• Large, high-definition 2.5'' LCD monitor with wide viewing angle
• Simultaneous RAW/JPEG recording of an image selectively on the memory cards

Professional performance and reliability inherited from the EOS-1D Mark II
The EOS-1D Mark II N inherits the basic shooting functions, operability and high reliability of the EOS-1D Mark II making it a truly professional tool.

Major improvements on the EOS-1D Mark II N are as follow:

Evolution of digital image recording
(1) New Picture Style function for images that best fit the purposes and desired effects
The EOS-1D series standard image characteristic has been so far ''natural color reproduction maintaining fidelity with the subject without emphasis on sharpness'', allowing the users to freely retouch the image on their computer for the desired images. It is considered best for the professional's workflow where printing is essential.
While the previous models define basic image characteristics with the processing parameter and color matrix settings, the EOS-1D Mark II N uses the Picture Style concept newly developed to be a common feature of the EOS Digital series.

Six Picture Style settings
There are six Picture Style settings (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome (See Table 1 and Fig. 1). This enables users to select the optimum settings for their purposes and the desired effects at the time of shooting, just like choosing the appropriate film for a film camera. Picture Style features are about the same as those of the EOS 5D.

Three user-defined Picture Style settings
The EOS-1D Mark II N can also store up to three Picture Style settings set as desired by the user. Adjustable parameters are sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone. The adjustment range of each parameter is twice that of conventional models, allowing the photographer to make very specific settings.

Additional Picture Style file download
The initial file download service of new Picture Style files via the Internet has already started. The service will be enriched to better serve users' needs.

DPP Ver. 2.0 supporting Picture Style
The high-speed RAW image processing software DPP (Digital Photo Professional) Ver. 2.0 provided with the EOS-1D Mark II N supports Picture Style.
It enables RAW images shot with any EOS D30 or later EOS Digital camera, as well as the EOS-1D Mark II N, to be processed in any Picture Style setting.

(2) Longer bursts- 48 shots in JPEG Large, 22 shots in RAW
Thanks to the improved image-processing sequence, the maximum bursts are increased to 48 shots in JPEG Large (compression rate 8) and 22 shots in RAW from 40 and 22 respectively for the EOS-1D Mark II.

(3) Simultaneous RAW/JPEG image recording selectively on the memory cards
The EOS-1D Mark II can record the same image on both the CF memory card (slot 1) and SD memory card (slot 2) simultaneously, and the EOS-1D Mark II N is further improved to allow users to record simultaneously the same image as RAW on the slot 1 and as JPEG on the slot 2 (or vice versa) in the RAW+JPEG mode.

(4) Easy switching between memory card slots
By pressing the memory card selection button in ready-to-shoot state, the memory slot selection screen is directly displayed to choose Slot 1 or 2. The function provides users quicker switching compared to preceding models.

(5) Automatic folder creation
When the number of images files in a folder reaches 9,999 the EOS-1D Mark II interrupts shooting and asks the user whether to create a new folder. The EOS-1D Mark II N creates a new folder automatically and set the file number to 0001. This improvement was suggested by press photographers who take a large number of photos.

(6) User-defined file name
With the EOS-1D Mark II, the first four alphanumeric characters of file names are factory default and cannot be changed by users. With the EOS-1D Mark II N, file names can be customized by the user on the file name setting screen (Fig. 2).

(7) Low Level Format for SD memory card
The Low Level Format feature enables the user to completely erase data stored in the SD memory card. This is effective to prevent slowdown of the writing speed and to protect data. However, the Low Level Format is not possible for the CF memory card because some CF memory cards are not compatible with the Low Level Format standard and it is difficult to guarantee compatibility after formatting.

Note: Information recorded on memory cards is divided into two areas; data managing area and data area. Data is in general not actually removed when it is erased. Typically the data validity is only changed from valid to invalid in the managing area but the data itself remains until it is overwritten by new data.

Evolution of image review operation
(1) 230,000-pixel, high-definition 2.5'' LCD monitor
The EOS-1D Mark II N employs the large, high-definition 2.5'' LCD monitor (Photo 2) from the EOS 5D without sacrificing operability.

With its wide viewing angle, this monitor is very easy to see even from a considerable angle, and its large area, about 1.6 times larger than that of the EOS-1D Mark II (see Fig. 3), means the menu display is large and easy to read as well.

(2) Image can be magnified immediately after shooting
With the EOS-1D Mark II N, an image can be magnified on the LCD monitor immediately after shooting.

(3) Image can be magnified from any AF point
With previous models, magnified zoom display always starts from the center of the image. The EOS-1D Mark II N is improved so the magnification can start from any point in the AF frame selected by the user at the time of shooting.

(4) Better magnified image quality
With increased internal memory capacity for magnified image playback, image quality is improved.

(5) Enhanced Info display
Information such as file size, monochrome (B/W) and R, G, B (if RGB histogram is set) is additionally displayed.

Evolution of shooting operability
(1) 0.2-second start-up time
The EOS-1D Mark II N has a quick 0.2-sec start-up time thanks to the expertise accumulated through the development of the EOS 20D and EOS 5D.

(2) Improved ISO setting operability
While on preceding models, the ISO speed and ISO bracketing settings are displayed only on the top panel, the information is also displayed in the viewfinder of the EOS-1D Mark II N.

(3) Menu operation during data writing
The EOS-1D Mark II N provides users menu operation during image processing or data writing to the memory card.

(4) Focusing screen
The Super precision matte Ec-S screen was developed together with the EOS-1D Mark II N to make manual focusing easier with f/2.8 or larger aperture lens.

Note: Since the diffusion characteristic of the matte surface is different from the existing Ec-series focusing screens, C.Fn-00-2 is necessary to use the Ec-S. It cannot be used with EOS-1D series cameras other than the EOS-1D Mark II N because correct exposure cannot be guaranteed.
