Development objectives
The PIXUS MP990 is the top model in Canon’s PIXUS MFP all-in-one series, which combines all the functions demanded from a multifunctional peripheral - including printing, copying, scanning, and direct (computerless) printing - with an advanced level of usability.
A key feature of the new model is its next-generation six-color ink system, including gray ink, that realizes high-grade prints in stunning detail, whether color photos or first-rate B&W photos.
The aim of the PIXUS MP990 development was threefold: to improve basic inkjet printer performance - namely photo quality and speed, to fashion a sophisticated design that looks at home in any interior, and to simplify operation for the user. We believe the MP990, by offering greater value to many types of customers, will promote a new and attractive digital photo life.
Features of the PIXUS MP990
FINE high-density print head technology results in higher quality prints
FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering)is Canon’s high-density print head technology. With this technology, the print head, which ejects ink droplets as small as one picoliter, can create brilliant high-quality prints with resolutions up to 9600* × 2400dpi. FINE - the technology that makes fast and beautiful prints possible - is unique in two ways: the production method of the integrated precision nozzles, which uses semiconductor lithography production equipment developed in-house, and the ink-ejection mechanism, which continually and accurately dispenses a minute, but consistent, amount of ink.
Better print quality is also achieved by the six-color ink system. This system uses five dye-based inks - yellow, magenta, cyan, black, and gray - along with a pigment-based black ink. The gray ink lends color photos better color stability and richer expressiveness and adds a professional look to B&W photos.
*Ink droplets can be placed with a pitch of 1/9600 inch at minimum. |

ChromaLife 100+ offers longevity of over 300 years in an album
Not only does the combination of genuine Canon dye-based inks and genuine Canon photo papers give users richer and more vivid color reproduction, it can preserve the beauty of their treasured photos for many years to come.
Photos sealed under film in an album and kept in the dark can last more than 300 years* when printed with ChromaLife 100+ ink on Photo Paper Gold Glossy (GL-101) paper and more than 200 years* on Photo Paper Pro Platinum (PT-101) or Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss (SG-201) paper.

Faster prints
The PIXUS MP990 can print an L-sized borderless photo in just 17 seconds* and print an A4 color original as fast as 9.1ipm* without sacrificing any picture quality or fine detail. This is accomplished with a precision ''double encoder'' paper-transport system that uses encoders in both the transport roller assembly and the paper-output roller assembly, and our Three-Size Droplet technology, which efficiently deploys ink droplet in different sizes - one picoliter, two picoliters, and five picoliters.

Auto Photo Fix II
The PIXUS MP990 comes with Auto Photo Fix II, a substantial upgrade from the original Auto Photo Fix function. This function automatically applies a number of corrections and optimizes photos based on face detection and scene analysis. The biggest addition is the Multi-Zone Exposure Correction feature, which analyzes the exposure levels in a photo by zone and optimizes the brightness in darker areas. This feature makes it possible to print better looking photos by, for example, brightening just the underexposed backlit subject without adjusting the background brightness. Auto Photo Fix II can be used when printing directly from a digital camera or memory card, when printing*1 from a computer, or when using the photo reprint*2 or film scan*2 features.
*1 Requires Easy-PhotoPrint EX or MP Navigator EX, which are bundled with the MFP.
*2 Red-eye correction is not supported.
Variety of direct print options
The MP990 supports PictBridge, the industry direct printing standard, so that users can enjoy direct printing by simply plugging in a PictBridge-compatible digital camera or digital video camera (still images only) from Canon or any other manufacturer. The card direct feature lets users insert a memory card* into the unit’s card slot and make borderless prints or create stickers just by selecting the appropriate images. An additional function saves scanned data directly to a memory card or USB flash drive.
*Some memory cards require a special adapter. (Photos 3 and 4) |

3.8-inch TFT color LCD monitor
The MP990 boasts a TFT color LCD monitor with a wide viewing angle that at 3.8 inches is even larger than the MP980’s 3.5-inch monitor. Not only does the monitor display images from memory cards and film scans, it also makes the MFP easier to operate by displaying various modes, such as the intuitive menu icons that rotate in sync with the Easy-Scroll Wheel. Improved paper handling
· Front-loading paper cassette (plain paper only)
The MP990 includes a regular, top-loading rear tray and a front-loading paper cassette that accepts plain paper only. This configuration eliminates the hassle of switching paper because postcards and photo paper can be fed from the rear tray and plain paper from the front cassette.
· Auto duplex printing
Auto duplex printing is standard on the MP990. It prints on both the front and back of a sheet. This function enables plain-paper auto duplex printing as well as automating the printing of both sides of a postcard.*
· BD/DVD/CD label printing
The MP990 can print photos and text directly on printable Blu-ray (BD) disks, DVDs, and CDs.
*Auto duplex postcard printing requires a compatible software package. (Photos 7, 8, and 9) |

Wired and wireless LAN connectivity is standard
The MP990’s wireless LAN connectivity gives users full printing accessibility wherever the printer is placed. Either WPS or WCN (supported on Windows Vista only) can be used to configure the wireless LAN.
AOSS, a simple wireless LAN configuration system developed by Buffalo Inc., is also supported. Wireless LAN connectivity lets users print photos from their iPhone or iPod touch as well.
Enhanced copying features
The PIXUS MP990 achieves outstanding color reproduction performance with the use of Canon’s Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology. It automatically distinguishes between text and images in the original and processes the data to give smoother looking photos and more contrast and sharpness to black text and lines. The main copying features are described below.
· Plain-paper copying
The MP990 features a wealth of plain-paper copying options, including duplex copying; scaled copying from 25 to 400 percent of the original, adjustable in one percent increments; continuous copying up to 99 pages; 4 in 1 copying that copies four original pages onto one page; and auto magnification that detects the size of the original and scales it to print perfectly on the selected paper. Auto density copying automatically adjusts the copying density for originals where reverse-side bleed-through is a concern or for originals that have a dark background color. Frame-erase copying brightens shadows in the margins that occur when copying magazines or similar materials.
· BD/DVD/CD label copying
Users can quickly and easily copy labels by placing the source Blu-ray disk, DVD, or CD on the platen and loading a printable disk in the DVD/CD label print tray. The MP990 can also print photo reprints directly without a computer.
Scanner features
· High-resolution scans from a 4800dpi CCD sensor
The MP990’s CCD sensor, with an optical resolution of 4800dpi, provides clear, high-resolution scans. Combined with our advanced image processing technology, the sensor reproduces smooth images that are faithful to the original. The Hi-Speed USB interface makes fast transfers of scanned data possible.
· Film scanning
The MP990 can scan six unmounted 35mm film frames or four mounted slides at one time with the dedicated film guide that accepts both slides and unmounted filmstrips. (Photo 10) |
