This month’s technical report introduces two new inkjet MFSs, the PIXUS MG8130 (Photo 1-1) and the PIXUS MG6130 (Photo 1-2) that went on sale in September 2010.
Canon revamped the exterior design and realized more intuitive controls to make printing easier and more enjoyable than ever before. Some of the many new features include the six-color ink tank system including a gray ink - creating richer expressions in color prints and authentic black-and-white prints, enhanced wireless printing via Wi-Fi connections.
Advantage 1 - Photo-quality printing

Photo 2: Six-color ink tank system
●Six-color ink tank system for amazing looking photos and text
The feature a six-color ink tank system that includes a gray ink tank. The gray ink gives color prints better color stability and richer expressiveness and adds a professional finish to B&W photos by reducing the graininess in gradient regions. The dye-based and pigment-based black inks create sharp, attractive photos and text. The ink system (Photo 2) gives beautiful results not only on photo paper but also on plain paper and postcard address blocks.
●FINE high-density print head technology results in higher quality prints
FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) is Canon’s high-density print head technology. With this technology, the print head, which ejects ink droplets as fine as one picoliter, can create brilliant high-quality prints with resolutions up to 9600* × 2400 dpi. FINE - the technology that makes fast and beautiful prints possible - is unique in two ways: the production method of the integrated precision nozzles, which requires semiconductor lithography production equipment developed in-house, and the ink-ejection mechanism, which consistently and accurately dispenses a minute amount of ink.
*Ink droplet can be placed with a pitch of 1/9600 inch atminimum.
●ChromaLife 100+ offers a longevity of more than 300 years for album-protected photos
Not only does the combination of genuine Canon dye-based inks and genuine Canon photo papers give users richer and more vivid color reproduction, it can preserve the beauty of their treasured photos for many years to come.
Photos sealed under film in an album and kept in a dark location can last more than 300 years* when printed with ChromaLife 100+ ink on Photo Paper Gold Glossy (GL-101) paper and more than 200 years* on Photo Paper Pro Platinum Grade(PT-101) or Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss (SG-201) paper.

●Easy-PhotoPrint Pro connects the multifunctionals with EOS digital SLR cameras
Easy-PhotoPrint Pro is a plug-in that works with Digital Photo Professional (Ver. 2.1 and later) — Canon’s RAW editing software for the EOS Digital camera series — that enables seamless printing (Figure 1). Users can print RAW images without conversions and make advanced color adjustments effortlessly. Professional-looking black-and-white prints can be made from color data simply by choosing from either the standard “B&W” option or the “cool tone” or “warm tone” options. Easy-PhotoPrint Pro also works as a plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® CS / CS2 / CS3 / CS4 / CS5 and Adobe® Photoshop® Elements 6 / 7 / 8.

Figure 2: Full HD Movie Print screenshot
●Print favorite frames from full-HD movies
These new MFPs let users print favorite frames from movie data*2 recorded with a Canon digital camera*3 (Figure 2). This function uses the frames before and after the selected frame to correct for noise and jaggies to make an attractive print. Movie printing is available from Solution Menu EX and Easy-PhotoPro EX.
*2 Selecting a movie frame requires ZoomBrowser EX 6.5 or later (Windows version) or ImageBrowser 6.5 or later (Mac version). This function is not available on PowerPC Macs. Only MOV files taken with a Canon digital camera are supported.
*3 Please check our catalogs and Web site for details of the measurement conditions.
Advantage 2 - Improved operability
●Intelligent Touch System provides lighted navigation
The Intelligent Touch System navigates the user through a series of operations by lighting only the necessary keys. Key touches are acknowledged with a tone, and the electrostatic sensors provide a reassuring response even to light touches. The scroll wheel also operates very smoothly (Photos 3, 4, and 5).

●Control screen is easy to read, understand, and use
Canon has refined the LCD monitor and control panel to guide users to their intended goal from among the units’ many functions. The LCD monitor displays new large, intuitive graphical icons and a new photo icon that provides visual confirmation of the final print (Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7). Furthermore, common operations, such as copying and photo printing, have been simplified so they require fewer steps.

●Standard equipped with Wi-Fi and wired LAN connectivity
The MG8130 and MG6130 support Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n / IEEE 802.11b / IEEE 802.11g) connections for wireless printing and scanning from a computer. The card reader function* can also be shared wirelessly from anywhere in a room. Furthermore, troublesome Wi-Fi configurations can be made with press of a button if the local network uses an NEC Access Technica access point that supports Raku Raku Wireless Support, an AOSS-capable Buffalo Wi-Fi access point, or a WPS-capable Wi-Fi access point. The MG8130 and MG6130 also support wired LAN connections (100BASE-TX / 10BASE-T).
*4 Writing to a card via a network is only possible on computers using Windows. Mac computers support only card reading.
*Wi-Fi and wired LAN cannot be used simultaneously. An access point is required for Wi-Fi connections.

Figure 9: iPhone + access point + printer
●Wireless printing available from iPhones, iPads, and Android devices
With Wi-Fi connectivity, the MG8130 and MG6130 support photo printing from Android devices, iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches. Users can print photos wirelessly from computers or mobile devices anywhere in their home (Figure 9).

Photo 6: Front-loading paper cassette
and rear tray
●Convenient front-loading paper cassette for plain paper and rear tray
The paper-feed configuration eliminates the hassle of switching paper because postcards and photo paper are fed from the rear tray and plain paper from the front-loading cassette (Photo 6). The front-loading paper cassette has been optimized to eliminate paper jams for stress-free printing by limiting it to plain paper only. The rear tray is designed to handle thicker paper without curling or scratching. Furthermore, the rear tray opens automatically if closed when printing starts.
Advantage 3 - High-resolution scans
●4800 dpi optical resolution scans
The scanning sensor, with an optical resolution of 4800 dpi, provides clear, high-resolution scans. The scanner’s light source uses high-luminance white LEDs. Scanning can start immediately because the LEDs deliver stable intensity as soon as they are powered on, unlike conventional fluorescent lamps that need time to warm up.

Photo 7: Film scanning
●Film scanning (MG8130 only)
The MG8130 can scan six unmounted 35-mm film frames or four mounted slides at one time (Photo 7). It can scan both negative and positive film. By converting film to data, photos can be archived and can be printed at any time. When scanning films, it is possible to apply fading and backlight correction, grain reduction, and sharpening.
Advantage 4 - Versatile print functions

Photo 8: Photo reprinting

Photo 9: Auto duplex printing

Photo 10: BD, DVD, and CD label printing
●Easy photo copying
Photos can be reprinted beautifully with no fuss by simply placing the original on the platen and pressing the button. The auto clipping and auto alignment functions for multiple originals make for efficient duplication of multiple photos (Photo 8).
●Auto duplex printing and copying
Both models have auto duplex printing for plain paper and postcards.* This means both sides of postcards can be printed automatically without having to turn the cards over. Duplex copying is also possible (Photo 9).
*5 Auto duplex postcard printing requires a compatible software package.
●BD, DVD, CD label printing
The MG8130 and MG6130 can print photos and text directly on printable Blu-ray disks, DVDs, and CDs (Photo 10).
●Easy-WebPrint EX*6 simplifies printing Web pages
Easy-WebPrint EX, a plug-in for Internet Explorer 7 / 8, makes printing Web pages a snap. The software can automatically select and print only the relevant portion of a Web page or combine and print desired sections of multiple pages according to a user-specified layout.
*6 Installation requires an Internet connection.
