comparisons

Figure 1-1: Size comparisons

Figure 1-1: Size comparisons

The following technologies were used to dramatically reduce the EOS Kiss X7's size and weight (Figure 1).

(1) Smaller CMOS package

The CMOS sensor was implemented in a land grid array (LGA) no-lead package, which reduced the package's height and thickness (Figure 2).

(2) Smaller shutter unit

A slimmer, shorter shutter unit was designed by using a compact, space-saving cored motor and an electronic first curtain instead of a mechanical one and by moving to a new three-blade configuration (Figure 3).

(3) High-density mounting for a smaller main PCB

The reduced size of the high-density main PCB and a smaller CMOS PCB (thanks to the smaller CMOS package) made it possible to shrink the chassis.

(4) Compact battery pack

The EOS Kiss X7, like the EOS M, uses the compact LP-E12 battery pack.

Figure 4 illustrates all the size and weight reductions made on the X7.

Advanced digital functions for fine detail and top picture quality

Photo 4: CMOS sensor

Photo 4: CMOS sensor

(1) Approx. 18.00-megapixel, APS-C sized CMOS sensor

The EOS Kiss X7 carries a high-sensitivity CMOS sensor (Photo 4) with approximately 18.00 effective megapixels and an effective sensor size of approximately 22.3 x 14.9 mm.

(2) DIGIC 5 provides high image quality and high-speed processing

The EOS Kiss X7 has the same DIGIC 5 imaging processor as the X7i. The DIGIC 5 enables fast, low-noise image processing and provides the processing power for the camera's new functions, such as Hybrid CMOS AF II.

(3) Wide ISO 100 to 12800 range, extendable to ISO 25600, creates more shooting opportunities

Thanks to the DIGIC 5's low-noise image processing, the X7 has the same full-time 100 to 12800 ISO range as the X7i.

Outstanding core camera functions

(1) Nine AF points

The nine-point AF sensor's center point functions as a cross-type point with f/5.6 light flux. The center sensor gives very accurate AF measurements with vertical-line detection when using brighter lenses up to a maximum aperture of f/2.8.*

(2) Optical viewfinder for comfortable viewing

The clear, comfortable optical viewfinder provides approximately 95 percent coverage and approximately 0.87x magnification with an eye point of about 19 millimeters.

(3) Continuous shooting speed of approximately 4 fps

Despite its compact body, the X7 delivers a maximum continuous shooting speed of approximately 4 fps. It also offers silent shooting with whisper-quiet operating noise.

* AF measurements are made with the f/5.6 cross-type point when the camera is used with the EF 50mm f/2.5 compact macro or the EF 28-88mm f/2.8-4L USM lenses.

Enhanced image creation functions

(1) New shooting modes

The X7 comes with three new modes — Kids, Food, and Candlelight — for capturing your kids as they grow up, birthdays, and other treasured memories (Photo 5).

The Kids mode keeps always-in-motion kids in focus and renders photos with healthy skin tones. The Food mode creates photos with bright, mouth-watering colors. And the Candlelight mode turns out photos with hues that recreate the ambience of candlelight.

with the Fish-eye effect selected

(2) Extra Effect Shot

A new Creative Auto function, Extra Effect Shot lets the user select various creative effects (Figure 5). Five creative filters, four picture styles, and one ambient-based setting can be selected for the Extra Effect Shot.

(3) Cropping

Users can crop JPEG images (either L, M, S1, or S2 sizes) in-camera after they have been taken. Users can select the aspect ratio (3:2, 16:9, 4:3, or 1:1) and the cropped size (in 40 steps) as well as rotate and shift the crop frame. The cropped image is saved as a separate file from the original.

Advanced Live View shooting functions

Figure 6: Hybrid CMOS AF II system's focusing area

Figure 6: Hybrid CMOS AF II
system's focusing area

(1) Hybrid CMOS AF II

The Hybrid CMOS AF system uses the CMOS imaging sensor for contrast AF and phase-difference AF. The EOS Kiss X7, however, uses the Hybrid CMOS AF II system, which expands the focus area to 80 percent of the frame (Figure 6). The new system enables fast autofocusing over a wide area of the frame.

Focusing is faster than before too because we have improved the control over the lens's movement.

(2) New lens enables faster, more comfortable AF operation

Users can obtain even faster and smoother AF performance in both Live View and movie shooting by using the newly developed EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens with the X7.

Advanced movie shooting functions

(1) Movie Servo AF

Hybrid CMOS AF II, covering approximately 80 percent of the frame, functions with Movie Servo AF.

Although Servo AF works with all EF lenses, Movie Servo AF works even more quietly and smoothly when the EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens or the newly developed EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is attached to the camera.

(2) Miniature effect movie

This is the movie version of the Miniature effect creative filter. With this effect, users can take movies in which everything looks like miniature models in motion.

More operating comfort

(1) Intuitive and convenient LCD monitor touch panel

The LCD monitor includes a touch panel, which allows users to do most operations with their fingertips while viewing the monitor. Touch operations include menu operations, shooting function settings, and scrolling through photos and magnifying/reducing photos in playback mode.

(2) Clear View LCD II monitor

The EOS Kiss X7 comes with a wide 3.0-type high-resolution LCD monitor with about 1.04 million dots. The monitor has a solid construction that eliminates the gap (air layer) between the surface layer and the liquid crystals to stop reflections.

(3) Able to display 36 and 100 index images

The camera can display either 4, 9, 36, or 100 index images for easier image searching.
