When plastic is made from recycled materials, it tends to have inferior properties as a result of aging and the effect of the heat added in the regeneration process. Because of this phenomenon, recycled materials have conventionally been limited to a maximum mixing ratio of 30% in order to maintain quality. Canon, however, has developed a technology for producing plastics purely from recycled materials without the addition of any new ones. Plastic made of 100% recycled material, such as the ground-up plastic covers of recovered copiers, have been used for the components of imageRUNNER ADVANCE series.

Canon Ecology Industry and Canon Electronic Business Machines Hong Kong were commended for their use of 100% recycled plastic* for the exterior cases of calculators. This innovation was recognized with the awarding of the Director-General of the Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Circular Resource Techniques and Systems Award for 2010.
* Plastic used is recycled from plastic collected from models produced prior to the introduction of the imageRUNNER ADVANCE series. (As of January 2012)
