Health Management

Prevention of Lifestyle-Related Diseases

In line with the Japanese government's Health Japan 21* campaign and the enactment of Japan's Health Promotion Law, the Canon Group performs lifestyle checks during regular medical examinations. Based on these results, all Group companies in Japan have determined items for improvement with the aim of actively preventing lifestyle-related diseases on an ongoing basis. Of the 10 improvement items pointed out in 2004, seven were confirmed to have shown improvement in 2010.
In response to revisions to the healthcare system that became effective in 2008, we are expanding the age range for health guidance to include employees aged 30 and older. Efforts to raise awareness of metabolic syndrome are tailored to each employee, and include the creation of health calendars as visual records of changes in an individual's health over 10 years. Such measures are carried out in a cooperative framework with the corporate health insurance union.
Our health-promotion measures for 2010 included the Canon Group Walking Event, Veggie Campaign, educational activities to encourage cancer screening, and specific health guidance initiatives.

Major Health-Promotion Initiatives in 2010
Groupwide Measures
Canon Group Walking Event

This event has been held since 2005 for Group employees in Japan with the objective of promoting good health.

In 2010, in addition to hosting the Walking Event itself, Canon also donated 100 yen for every person who completed an average of 10,000 steps a day during the three-month event period as a special social contribution program.
Veggie Campaign during National Work Health Week Canon is engaging in companywide efforts to take on lifestyle-related diseases, which arise as a result of daily lifestyle habits. In 2010 we initiated a three-year program, called the Veggie Campaign, for promoting awareness of the vital importance of a balanced diet. The campaign calls for employees to join with their colleagues and family members in eating vegetables to gain good nutritional balance.
Measures at Individual Sites
Advancing efforts tailored to a wide range of purposes and regional characteristics Activities included consultations with industrial doctors and medical healthcare staff for employees, seminars for the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, and seminars on diet and exercise.

Promoting Mental Healthcare Initiatives

To promote its comprehensive mental health policy, Canon Inc. effectively conducts various programs that incorporate the four key care and three key prevention guidelines from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
In addition to conducting awareness activities and preventative education to promote self-care in 2010, we also established and continued to develop an education system focusing on employees in their first and second years of employment to further bolster our system for individual support.
While continuing to engage in the above efforts, we also plan to create more individual support programs.
