Canon provides support for the Signal of Hope Project, whose aim is to assist reconstruction and revival in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which hit northeastern Japan, called the Tohoku region, on March 11, 2011.
The corporation managing the project is the Tohoku Fisheries Reopening Aid Fund "Signal of Hope." Its objective is to resume fisheries operations and fishing port functions quickly in the coastal areas of the Tohoku region, which suffered enormous damage and loss as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Through this project, local public bodies and related organizations to which the Earthquake Disaster Exemption Law applies receive the minimum materials and equipment required to resume fisheries market operations at the principal ports in the affected region. These include refrigeration containers to freeze fish unloaded at the ports, remodeled freezing containers and various types of vehicles.
Canon contributed a total of ¥100 million to this project, for remodeled freezing containers, office equipment and other items needed for the early restoration of industrial activity in the Tohoku region.
On August 22, a ceremony was held for the delivery of remodeled freezing containers for use in fisheries operations at the Onagawa and Ishinomaki Fish Markets in Miyagi Prefecture. These containers presented at the ceremony were scheduled to begin operating by September, when Pacific saury fishing would be underway in earnest. Fisheries people in the cities of Onagawa and Ishinomaki expressed their gratitude by saying that, "We have received greatly appreciated aid, which will give our fisheries revival the support it needs. Having refrigeration containers and the required materials and equipment at our fish markets again has created jobs as well. The aid we receive at this time will surely be a symbol of hope for people in local communities."
