Class on folding paper cranes

Canon U.S.A. carried out an event under the slogan "Canon, ARGENTINA Y JAPON UN SOLO CORAZON (Argentina and Japan, One Heart)," in which it delivered 13,500 folded paper cranes and 1,780 message cards and Japanese national flags with the word "Bond" and messages from children in Argentina, from Argentina to disaster-hit northeastern Japan.

This endeavor came about as a result of the experiences of Canon U.S.A.'s Japanese employees stationed in the U.S. receiving many warm words of support and encouragement for Japan, from people in America after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and their wish to pass these on to people in the disaster-hit areas.

This activity was mainly carried out in Argentina, a country with whom Canon U.S.A. deepened its bonds by serving as an official sponsor of the Copa America soccer tournament. Demonstrations on how to fold paper cranes were presented at five shopping malls in Buenos Aires, and people who stopped to watch the demonstrations were asked to fold cranes and also write warm messages of support for Japan on message cards. In addition, the same activity was carried out at local elementary and middle schools visited for this purpose.

With the cooperation of the Japan Football Association, the folded cranes and message cards gathered were delivered by the Argentine Ambassador to Japan, Raul Guillermo Dejean Rodriguez, and presented to the Lieutenant Governor of Miyagi Prefecture, Hidekazu Miura, the Deputy Mayor of Sendai City, Nobuyoshi Inaba and the President of the Velgalta Sendai soccer club, Yoichi Shirahata, at a ceremony before a match between Velgalta Sendai and Kashiwa Reysol at Yurtec Stadium Sendai. At the presentation ceremony, cries of "ARGENTINA! ARGENTINA!" rose from the stands, and Ambassador Dejean expressed his appreciation to Canon for serving as bridge of friendship between Japan and Argentina.

Thereafter, these folded cranes and message cards from Argentina were displayed as part of the decorations for the Sendai Tanabata Star Festival, which was visited by 2,080,000 people.
