Support for flood refuges in southern Malaysia

Both Canon Marketing Malaysia and Canon Opto Malaysia gave support to the Batu Pahat area in Johor in southern Malaysia, where many people are suffering from flood damage due to heavy rains since the end of 2006. The damage is most serious in this area, and 50,000 people have no choice but to live in shelters.
Prior to the relief activities, the staff of Canon Inc. visited the area to check the situation, and examine the most appropriate way of providing support. As a result, it was found out that sufficient relief goods had not reached some refugee camps where drainage was bad. Consequently, it was decided to help five refugee camps where support was most badly needed.
A relief party consisting of Canon Marketing Malaysia and Canon Opto Malaysia collected relief goods from employees of both companies : a 40 - foot container of food, water, and clothing. The two companies collected contributions amounting to 135,000 RM (approximately 4.6 million yen), and bought relief goods offloaded to six trucks (approximately 30t) based on discussions with local people. The relief party itself toured the refugee camps on January 23, 2007, handing each victim relief goods.
Abdul Manaf, headman of one of the villages Canon supported, expressed his gratitude: "We appreciate very much that you came a long way to provide us with the relief goods we needed. We sincerely extend our thanks for the support and efforts shown by all the people of Canon."
