Top > Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief > Eradication of Hunger Among Children! Participation in “Walk the World for Africa”
On May 25, 2008, Canon employees and their family members participated in “Walk the World for Africa”, a charity walk organized by the Japan Office of the WFP: United Nations World Food Programme and the Japan Association for the United Nations World Food Programme.
This walk for charity is held on the same day in countries around the globe. This year, prior to the 4th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), the charity walk walked through Yokohama to eliminate hunger, which afflicts roughly 200 million people in Africa. Through holding this event, people of the world are made aware of the problem of hunger and a portion of the participation fee (1,000 yen) is donated to the WFP School Feeding Programme in Africa (*).
Canon has been participating in this charity walk since 2006, and participants have increased every year. In spite of the inopportune rain on the day of the walk this year, 101 people from Canon participated.
* The School Feeding Programme is an activity to expand opportunities for education through providing highly nutritious meals to children who cannot attend school because of poverty.
