On May 15, Canon Group employees, along with their family members and friends, took part in the WFP Walk the World 2016, a charity walkathon organized by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Japan Association for the World Food Programme. Walk the World — a walkathon held in countries worldwide — aims to stamp out hunger, from which many of the world’s children are suffering. Canon has been participating in the walkathon since 2006, and this year 172 participants from Canon Inc. and the Canon Marketing Japan Group gathered for the event.

The walkathon began at Rinko Park under clear skies and was divided into a 5-kilometer course that included the Red Brick Warehouse district and Bashamichi and a 10-kilometer course taking in such landmarks as Harbor View Park and the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery, affording participants sights of Yokohama and Minato Mirai as they walked. This year Canon lent digital SLR cameras and compact digital cameras to participating employees and gave a photography class to children. The enthusiastic participants started off with cameras in hand, taking photos as they went along.

At the end of the walk, the participating employees described their experiences. “It’s hard to get involved on your own. But I sensed the tremendous power that happens when people gather for the same purpose like a charity.” “It was a great chance for the kids to learn about society.” “It was a fantastic event. I wish I had participated sooner.” “It will be a good memory for me and my family.”

A portion of the walkathon’s entry fees will be donated to the School Meal Programme, which helps provide school meals in developing countries. The event attracted a record high turnout of 4,658 people, and their contributions will make it possible to offer school meals to over 140,000 schoolchildren in developing countries.
