Cycling along Kikugahama Beach
Let's ride our bikes to Kikugahama before the midday sun starts beating down.
A gentle breeze is blowing; the sand is already baking hot.
We change into our swimsuits and run along the scorching beach and dive into the sea.
After playing to our heart's content splashing in the waves, we rest beneath the shady pines.
While sipping on some sodas bought at a nearby store, we watch the froth form and disappear.
Gazing over our pop bottles at the ocean, we listen to the waves break and then recede.
A friend calls, and we plunge back into the water.
*I often went swimming at Kikugahama beach in Hagi when I was a kid. Famed for its beautiful pine forests, it is mentioned in classical Japanese poetry as the pine grove of Abu and cited in Famous Places of Japan. A summer fireworks festival is held here every August 1, when fireworks are launched offshore to the delight of onlookers.
Steam Train Coming over the Bridge
A steam train has come across the fields and mountains to our town.
The Grand Lady blares her whistle as she passes.
Choo choo choo and chug chug chug she goes.
Counting the cars, I notice a child waving at me from a window.
I wave back "Hi!" and get a friendly smile in return.
On my next holiday I'll take the steam train to the neighboring town.
Today too, the Grand Lady is heading for your town full of smiling faces.
*The C57-1 steam locomotive plies the route between Yamaguchi and Tsuwano. She is affectionately known as Kifujin ("Grand Lady") in tribute to the majestic figure she cuts.
The Eight Views of Hagi Boat Tour
Autumn is in the air, and I decide to go on a little outing.
The wind through the pines ripples the river surface. I bump into a friend on the boat.
The boatman tells us tales of yore.
Sailing beyond the rows of pines we spy the old houses of Hagi. The town beyond the stone-lined moat looks hazy in the sea air.
The tour boat glides under the bridge out to the open sea, sending up spray.
We circle around through the waves of the Japan Sea back to the shore.
