Canon U.S.A. was an official sponsor of Copa America 2011, the South American soccer championship tournament held in July.
Copa America is a continental soccer tournament of national teams organized by the South American soccer federation CONMEBOL. Canon actively carried out support activities for the championship matches, providing about 100 copy machines and printers for the press center, professional camera services, etc., during the tournament.
In addition, as a part of its community contribution activities, Canon invited 100 elementary school children living in the mountain province of Jujuy (50 children each from Olaroz on the border with Chile and La Quiaca on the border with Bolivia) to attend a match.
Jujuy, a province in northern Argentina, was initially chosen as the area where the Japanese team competing in Copa America 2011 would set up its training camp. However, the team had to withdraw its entry due to the Great Northeast Japan Earthquake. As a result, no training camp was held in Jujuy, and many local people expressed their disappointment at this turn of events. It was under such circumstances that the invitation of the local children was realized, through the support of Tomonori Kitayama, Japan Football Association International Committee member stationed in Argentina.
In order to attend the match, the children of Olaroz traveled from Salar de Olaroz salt lake, located at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level, to the province capital 470 kilometers away. The trip took a whole day just one-way to the province capital, but the large group of children, visiting the city for the first time, greatly enjoyed watching the soccer match, and the endeavor ended as a wonderful success.
