Digital Camera Course of the Summer Exciting Project at Ota Ward Kugahara Elementary School

As part of activities to contribute to the community, Canon conducted a digital camera course on August 2, 2006, participating in the Summer Exciting Project conducted by Kugahara Elementary School in Ota Ward. This introductory course was intended for school children to learn about the process from the basic operation of a digital camera to taking photographs in macro mode.

Summer schools conducted in elementary schools in Ota Ward during the summer vacation provide school children with interesting, original learning programs prepared by teachers, parent-teacher associations, non-profit organizations, local self-governing bodies, and businesses. Canon has taken part in this program since 2004, and this is its third time.

< Event Overview >
Challenge macro photography with a digital camera
  • Date : Wednesday, August 2, 2006
  • Venue : Ota Ward Kugahara Elementary School
  • Intended for : The first to sixth graders
  • Duration : 60 minutes each session
  • Number of participants : 1st session 30 / 2nd session 22 (52 in total)

First, sample photos were projected on a screen. Then, to better understand macro photography, an explanation was given along with a quiz game in which participants guessed the subjects of pictures from photos of parts. After that, a compact digital camera was handed to each child, and the program staff gave information on the basic operation of the digital camera and macro photography. Some PTA members also helped the children practice taking photos of each other. Then, they were ready to attend the photo session.

In the schoolyard in high summer, children found cicada shells on the trunk of a tree, and took photos of flowers blooming in a flowerbed and a big sunflower in close-up. Feeling a sense of the season, they enjoyed freely taking photos.

Afterwards, each child chose his or her favorite from among about 20 photos, and connecting their digital cameras to a printer to print out their photos printed. They were fascinated by the results. A child who took a photo of the principal’s face ran up to him and tried to convey the excitement of having taken a good picture of him.

Children from first to six graders gathered together in this digital camera course. It provided participants with an opportunity to communicate with children of different school years through the act of taking pictures
