Canon digital camera course of the Summer Workshop program at Ota Ward Yaguchi Elementary School

As part of its activities to contribute to the community, Canon conducted a digital camera course, as part of the Summer Workshop program, at Yaguchi Elementary School in Ota Ward on July 24, 2006. This course aimed to provide school children with an opportunity to quickly learn the basic operation of a digital camera in macro mode.

Summer schools conducted by elementary schools in Ota Ward during the summer vacation provide school children with original learning programs prepared by teachers, parent-teacher associations, non-profit organizations, and businesses. Canon has participated in the program since 2005, and this was its second time.

< Event Overview >
Challenge macro photography with a digital camera
  • Date : Monday, July 24, 2006
  • Venue : Ota Ward Yaguchi Elementary School
  • Intended for : The 1st to 6th graders
  • Duration : 60 minutes for each session
  • Number of participants : 1st session 30 / 2nd session 26 (56 in total)

When sample pictures of macro photographed flower petals and thumbtacks were projected on a screen and the explanation on macro photography was given, the children voiced their amazement. Then, a compact digital camera was handed to each child, and the program staff gave them basic information on how to operate a digital camera and how to take photographs. Even beginners using a digital camera gradually got used to the operation as they practiced taking photos of each other. Then, they left for the photo session.

Unfortunately it looked like rain, and the children did not go out into the schoolyard. It turned out to be a photo session that was possible only on a rainy day. The participating children looked carefully at objects in their familiar school rooms -earthenware figures in the art room, the spines of books arranged in the library, and flowerpots containing morning glory plants in the classroom . They tried to look at them from different angles.

After the photo session, each child chose his or her favorite from among about 20 photos. Connecting their digital cameras to a printer, they had their photos printed right there. They showed their photos to classmates, and took them home as memories of this summer.
