Canon conducted a lens unit-making program at the University of Tokyo: Hongo Campus, on September 15, 2012, with the cooperation of Okada Laboratory, of Graduate School of Education, the University of Tokyo.
On the day of the program, 25 elementary school students, mainly living near the campus, gathered with their families.
At first, we introduced the history of the camera and explained mechanics of the camera and the lens unit. Next, we taught the children, with the assist of volunteer students, how to make a lens unit from some kinds of materials, such as a magnifying glass and handicraft paper. After completed making their lens unit, they attached their hand-made lens unit to a single-lens reflex digital camera, and then they went outside to take photos. They took photos of the abundant nature of Hongo Campus and some buildings, such as Yasuda Auditorium.
At the end of the program, the children selected their favorite photo, and which was printed out on a compact photo printer. These photos were presented to them finally. The children had a good opportunity to have fun of photographing with digital camera, through our program.
