Comments of the kids

First, the photographer Hikaru Nagatake gave an introductory talk, showing the children photos of junior photographers taken in previous years. She talked about how they could view the world from different perspectives if they looked at the same subject from different angles, and told them that it was important to communicate with the subject when taking pictures. Then, each child was given a digital camera, and the staff gave brief instructions on how to operate it, as well as advice on points requiring attention. Many children had some experience dealing with digital cameras, and after a little practice, they learned how to use them properly.

The schoolyard where they were shooting is relatively large for a Tokyo elementary school, and is attractive with trees, greenery, and various animals, which provided a variety of subjects. The children went to their favorite spots to photograph chickens running around, ducks, and beautiful flowers such as hydrangeas. They were completely absorbed in taking photos. It seemed that time spent photographing passed so quickly that some children did not want to stop. Then they went back to their classroom, and each child selected the photo they liked best.

It was difficult for them to choose a single photo out of so many. Each child printed his or her selection in the size of a postcard, put it in a frame, wrote its title or description, and painted pictures on the frame to make each work unique. Then, each child gave a presented their work in front of their friends.
