Kita-Suwa Elementary School is a five-minute walk from Keio-Nagayama station in the Tama hills, which still retain nature with a lot of greenery. Therefore, the children who took part in this photography course are close to nature every day observing familiar plants, biotopes, and handmade birdhouses set on trees.
For the photography class held on the 12th, a field session was conducted in Suwa-Kita Park adjacent to the school. The park has a small wood and a green slope on which fresh green grass grows thickly. Feeling the breeze blowing through the grass, the children enjoyed photographing here and there. They each freely took a photo figuring out the best way: one took a photo of small ants walking on a tree bark, another ran after a crow flying among big trees and waited for a chance to release the shutter, and another photographed both a train that he was fond of together with the surrounding greenery.
The session held on the 13th was conducted in the schoolyard. There are big trees lined up around the school grounds, and a great tit was constantly bringing food to a birdhouse set on one of the trees. Azaleas and pansies were in bloom around the school. Some children took photos of themselves reflected on the water of the biotope, while others tried to take photos looking down from a high place on some playground equipment. Everyone enjoyed taking photos from different viewpoints.
Upon coming back to the classroom, they had a presentation meeting. As might be expected of sixth graders, they were eager to give presentations one after another. It turned out to be a very interesting meeting with their lively presentations.
