Midorigaoka Elementary School in Izumi, Osaka
“Junior Photographers” was held at Izumi City Midorigaoka Elementary School in Osaka on June 5 (Thu.) and 6 (Fri.), 2008. A school dietitian who saw information about the photography course on the Internet passed it on to a teacher who wanted to provide children with an opportunity to understand the importance of their immediate environment. The teacher applied for the course, and the program was held as a comprehensive general class for fourth graders.

Midorigaoka Elementary School is located just a ten-minute ride from Izumi-chuo station on the Semboku Rapid Transit Railway. As the school name suggests, there is a lot of greenery around the school. Kagurazaki Park occupies a large area, which is maintained in as natural state as possible. Inside the park there is a replica of an ancient tomb from the Yayoi period. We can picture the locality of the city from the park. In addition, the population of children in Izumi city is increasing year by year, and that is rare in Osaka Prefecture. Two years ago in fact, a new elementary school was established near Midorigaoka Elementary School.
On the first day, the area was hit by sudden rainfall, and the site of the photography session was changed from Kagurazaki Park to the schoolyard. The children took photos under umbrellas during the session. Because they were familiar with the schoolyard, they moved about freely while enjoying taking photos: finding a small insect in the rain, or watching plants wet and full of life. At the start, some children thought it was difficult to take photos properly, but they gradually became familiar with handling a camera. They could finally take beautiful photos after figuring out some good ways.
On the second day, the weather cleared up. According to the schedule, Kagurazaki Park near the school was to be the venue. Inside the park there is a small hill that looks like a small wood covered with deep green trees. Jumping about, the children took pictures of rows of houses viewed from the hill, flying swallows, insects, and mushrooms.
At the presentation meeting, they looked a little bashful, but they showed their classmates works that they thought were good, and they were also impressed with their friends’ beautiful photos. It seems that all children, those who were using a camera for the first time and those who wanted to photograph more, realized how enjoyable it is to take photos and how beautiful nature close to them is.
How beautiful a cicada nymph is!
Look at it from underneath, and you will see a different world.
This is my best today!
The park is full of fresh greenery.
