- One Entry Card must be attached to each individual photo that is submitted. (Except in such cases as when multiple photos are contained within a single object, such as a photo book or a 3D-object.)
Please review the following entry information carefully to ensure successful application and entry procedures.

This open-to-the-public photo contest organized by Canon Inc. aims to discover, nurture and support talented new photographers attempting to redefine the boundaries of photographic expression. Photographic works that are original, creative and go beyond conventional approaches will be highly evaluated with the aim of encouraging creative activities to realize the potential offered through photography.
- Entry is limited to residents of Japan, regardless of nationality, age or experience (Both professional or amateur photographers may apply.).
- Both individuals and groups may apply. Entry by groups, however, is restricted to groups that will continue activities as a group into the future.
- Applicants under the age of 16 must submit papers, which show the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
- Entries should be limited to original works, which have not been previously nominated or not received prize in contests. You cannot submit the same works to other photo contest.
- Entry works must be of applicants’ own making, and applicants must retain the copyrights to their entries. Also, applicants are responsible for obtaining all necessary permissions from subjects, or for the use of artwork, films, photos or likenesses appearing in their entry works.
- Each applicant (individual or group) may submit one entry only. There are no restrictions regarding the form that an entry takes or the number of elements that make up an entry. However, entries submitted in the form of digital data will not be accepted.
Free. However, please note that applicants are responsible for all costs related to the submission and return of their entries.
- Grand Prize: One winner.
- Excellence awards: Six winners.
- Honorable mention awards: Thirty winners.
- Two screening meetings, namely the Excellence awards selection committee meeting and the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting, are held. In case of an excessive number of entries, a preliminary selection committee meeting may be held.
- Excellence awards winners and Honorable mention awards winners will be selected at the Excellence awards selection committee meeting, to be held in July 2008. Each of the six judges individually select one winner for the Excellence awards and five winners for the Honorable mention awards, so that the same applicant may be selected by more than one judge.
- The Grand Prize winner will be selected from among the Excellence awards winners through the mutual agreement of the judges at the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting, to be held in November 2008 during the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition.
- Financial grant of JPY 1 million (including JPY 200,000 for the Excellence awards).
- Additional grant of the Canon Products of the value of JPY 1 million (including the additional grant for the Excellence awards).
- Entitlement to hold a solo exhibition at the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition (including the touring exhibitions) next year.
- Entitlement to post the works on the top page of the issue of New Cosmos of Photography Journal in the next year.
- All privileges extended to winners of the Excellence awards.
- Financial grant of JPY 200,000.
- Additional grant of the Canon Products of the value of JPY200,000.
- Exhibition of their works in the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition (including touring exhibitions) this year.
- Attendance at the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting.
- Introduction of their works in the next issue of New Cosmos of Photography Journal.
- Introduction of their works on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa).
- Financial grant of JPY 30,000.
- Exhibition of their works in the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition at Tokyo this year.
- Introduction of their works in the next issue of New Cosmos of Photography Journal.
The financial grant for each award and the additional grant will be presented after the Grand Prize winner has been decided by the selection committee.

The Secretariat will directly contact the Excellence and Honorable mention awards winners by July 23 (Wed.), 2008. The names of the winners will be announced on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa) by July 24 (Thu.), 2008. Any inquiries regarding the results of the screenings will not be accepted.
The Excellence awards winners will be given an orientation session in Tokyo scheduled for August 2 (Sat.) regarding the production of their works, which will be exhibited at the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition.
The Grand Prize winner will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held after the closing of the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting. The winner will also be announced on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa).
When applying for entry, please specify how you would like to have your entries returned to you after the conclusion of the contest. Please choose one from the following four options at the time of application.
The options are:
“No need to return”
“Courier service, pay-on-delivery”
“Walk-in pick-up, Tokyo”
“Walk-in pick-up, Osaka”
(Note: In Japanese, a courier service is called “takuhai-bin”)
- These entries will be disposed of by the Secretariat after the Excellence awards selection committee meeting.
- These entries will be sent out by mid-August, after the Excellence awards selection committee meeting, to the addresses submitted by applicants at the time of application. Entries will only be returned to addresses in Japan.
- Upon receipt of their returned entries, applicants must bear the full expense of the courier delivery.
- The Secretariat will be entrusted with making all decisions regarding the selection of the courier service company (including delivery rates and applicable conditions) used to return the entries. Delivery rates are determined by the size and weight of the entries.
- The materials used for packing when returning entries may be different from materials used by applicants when the entries were initially submitted.
- During the period from the middle of July to the middle of August, applicants who will be away for an extended period of time or who will change addresses are asked to contact the Secretariat in advance.
- Any entry returned to the Secretariat due to an unknown address or other reason will be disposed of by the Secretariat if there has been no contact from applicant by the end of October 2008..
- In the case of entries that cannot be sent by postal mail or a courier service due to the form of the work or the materials used, applicants may go to either the Tokyo or Osaka Entries Reception Center to pick them up. (Please refer to the Q14 of Q&A section.)
*In the case of award-winning entries, the Secretariat will contact winners individually regarding how the work is to be returned.
