Overview comments of judges
The six judges gave their feedback after the award presentation ceremony. Araki said: “This time each one had originality, and there were various "good branches" appearing which was most interesting.” Each one once again individually gave their impressions of a photo’s appeal and inherent expression. Iiizawa said: “I certainly cannot remember a jumble of works coming together up to this point. Consequently, I once again felt how difficult it was to make a selection. In addition, I was forced to rethink just what photos are, and what the New Cosmos of Photography is. It would be good if this can be put into play in future photos.” He went on to emphasize various possibilities for the growth of expression that surrounds photos. Enomoto stated: “I said some harsh things, but rather than criticism, it was about what kind of problems there were in the photographic expression-what needs to be considered. And I used everyone’s photos as an opportunity for this.” He also inquired about the current state of photographic expression around the world, and talked about the possibilities for the New Cosmos of Photography. Nanjo said: “(More so than winning this time) while taking photos from now on, it is important that you know how to survive.” And Omori said: “I felt that Hata’s work was a debut piece.” Survival is also important, I am only halfway there myself, and that’s what is enjoyable.” He also talked about the importance of “painting one’s future as an artist.” Noguchi said: “(At the open selection meeting) it is important to hear criticism. I know it can be frustrating at the time, however, it will be important in the future. Therefore, do not forget these feelings of frustration, and I hope you will try hard.” With these sincere words that could only come from a senior artist with real life experience, he gave encouragement to all of the winners.
