I always think about how I can express strength that is found in ambiguity. Slightly (but confidently) breaking social rules, a material makes its presence felt for a moment, and we can feel that. A feeling of distance and airy atmosphere that are consequently generated make the relationship between the viewer and the subject ambiguous. Eternally repeating the comings and goings between the world of meaning and the world of shape, the image of the subject will not be categorized anywhere because of its vagueness, will not express anything, and will simply exist there. I am strongly attracted to the existence of such a material. In this series, I have tried to depict a human who was neither somebody with a name nor a general person. I wanted to grasp someone in-between.

Selecting judge: Kotaro Iizawa

There are two women seen from the back. One wears her hair long, the other short. One wears a Mickey Mouse hat, and the other has a black tag popping out around the neck. The meaning of this is unknown. However, “some ambiguous but unshakable existence” that he intends to depict seems to be clearly shown there. I’d like to see more pictures in this series, although the two pictures give the impression that it is a complete work. I have expectations for his following development.
