Statement

I want to photograph and collect what is lovely without any other considerations.
All I do is walk around, nothing more. That is everything.

Photographer’s statement

I like lovely things. What I want is the unexpected.
These are the sorts of things I want to photograph.

That’s all there is to it, but because there is so much in the world, for now, this will do.

Breathing and walking. That’s all that’s always the same.

Selecting judge: Minoru Shimizu

Takuma Nakahira is probably the groundwork for this style. Firing off frames with seeming abandon and relying on the power of photos that are composed of nothing more than photos. While there are many examples of this style, both good and bad, the overall impression that this collection produces is bleak and dreary. It has a type of emptiness where the focus is on things void of meaning and which, rather than slicing out and framing fragments of daily life, leaves us with nothing but bits utterly drained of their significance. Although the photos strike our eyes, their meaning remains inscrutable, leaving us chilled with dark emotions of masochism and impending danger. I feel he arranged this work with great insight into his own photos.
