Akiyoshi Kitagawa holds an exhibition titled “annoski” at POETIC SCAPE in Nakameguro
New Cosmos of Photography 2011 (the 34th competition) Honorable Mention winner Kitagawa, who resides in Hokkaido, takes his camera to areas where Ainu place names remain. He shoots long-exposure photographs from a few minutes to several tens of minutes from sunset until complete darkness. In old Japanese, this period when the sun sinks and darkness begins is called omagadoki (the twilight hour), and it is referred to as the time when utsushiyo (actual world) and tokoyo (eternal world) are joined.
From the depths of land that has been overwritten by various acts of modern people, Kitagawa's photos have a ritualistic feel, as if one is waiting for an image of ancient times to gradually make an appearance, and the mysterious landscapes with a blue cast are etched onto the film. (annoski means night, or midnight in the Ainu language.)
In this exhibition, about 15 pieces from the honorable mention-winning “annoski” series are on display.
Come and take a look.
