Shoka Arakaki’s Exhibition — “satie” — opens at Totem Pole Photo Gallery, Tokyo

Shoka Arakaki, an Excellence Award winner of New Cosmos of Photography 2005 (the 28th competition), is holding her first solo exhibition — “satie” — at Totem Pole Photo Gallery in Tokyo. Three years have passed since she won the Excellence Award for her work TSURU, for which she photographed an old lady called Tsuru, whose life was full of ups and downs. Arakaki’s long-awaited new collection is now being exhibited for the first time. During the exhibition period, there is also a slide show of the works of both Shoka Arakaki and Yoshihisa Kajioka, another Excellence Award winner of New Cosmos of Photography 2005 (the 28th competition). We hope you will take this opportunity to enjoy the exhibition and slide show.

Shoka Arakaki’s comment:

— “satie” —

Things that are raw and corruptible,
Things to be shot, and things to remain.

I’m not saying anything in particular, I only wanted to look serene.

What was nihilistic and always there.
Act of growing out of one’s former self.

What is structured by things that are red.

Things of no importance that I wanted to shoot,
I just couldn’t let go.

Yoshihisa Kajioka’s comment:

[travel]

I’m photographing familiar things as always.
All I’m doing is taking photos.
It might be worthless to do it and bothersome.
There’s a time, however, when I just love the act of taking photos.
Ordinary days and familiar things seem so precious.
