“Cherryblossoms,” a photo book of Katsumi Omori, released

“Cherryblossoms,” a photo book of Katsumi Omori, an Excellence Award winner at New Cosmos of Photography 1993 (the 9th competition), is to be published by Little More in late December.

Excerpt from the publisher’s press release:
It took the artist seven years to complete photographing “Cherryblossoms.”
Cherry blossoms are a grand motif that Japanese people have pursued and adopted throughout the ages in their paintings and poems. Naturally, cherry blossoms are a common motif in photography. Therefore, there is a big hurdle to get over and probably the danger of falling into uniformity. While trying to find a new way of photographic expression, Katsumi Omori dares to take a closer look at this difficulty. Consequently, an unusual photo book that has not been seen before has been created. The collected works were made us ing tungsten lighting for indoor photography as well as reverse (for slides) film for conventional daylight photography. The photos for which tungsten lighting was used appear to be bluish all over, so they look different from the usual photos of cherry blossoms, which are simply beautiful, because the ephemeral nature of cherry blossoms becomes more impressive. The cherry blossoms that Katsumi Omori photographs go beyond the symbolism of cherry blossoms, to sense transience and catch the sparkling moment of an encounter. He continues to try to see and question what photography is. This collection of Omori’s highly motivated work shows the attainment of his aims at this stage.
