Naoki Kajitani participates in the 30th Anniversary Exhibition of Photo Street
Naoki Kajitani, a winner of the Excellence Award 2002 (in the 25th competition), takes part in “Super Session 2007,” the 30th Anniversary Exhibition of Photo Street to be held at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, which goes by the name of “Geijutsu no Yakata (Palace of Art).” The exhibition is intended for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Photo Street, which was formed by artists from Himeji City in the 1970s. We hope that you will take the opportunity to attend this exhibition.
The artist’s comments:
The joint exhibition of Photo Street held annually at a large exhibition hall is not just a group exhibition. It looks like a collection of full-scale solo exhibitions in which each artist displays 30–50 works. For such an activity to retain the motivation and continue for 30 years is unparalleled, I believe. The participating artists are six regular members plus six guest photographers, including myself. I’m thinking of displaying a large print of my latest work from the “SP” series, on which I’ve been working in recent years.
I’m sure that this anniversary exhibition will spotlight the past, present and future of independent photographic expression.
As the exhibition is held during the Bon holiday, I hope that many people will come and enjoy the exhibition.
Regarding the work on display:
The title is “SP.”
While visiting local cities, I photograph scenery that draws my attention–indecent flyers about town, suspicious magazine advertisements, porno handbills pasted all over and backstreets that reflect a glimmer of energy from the Showa era.
While photographing such seemingly meaningless things, some even quite silly yet fondly remembered, I came to realize that I was photographing “Japan today” (in local areas apart from metropolitan areas).
My record of the visual details of these local areas, which are changing at a bewildering pace, give evidence that I’ve lived in such a world.
