Yutaka Yamashita releases his first photo book - “Gunkan Apartments”

Yutaka Yamashita, an Excellence Award winner of New Cosmos of Photography 2004 (the 27th competition) has launched his long-awaited first photo book titled “Gunkan Apartments.” In the photo book, which he produced while working on the Excellence Award winning work “OSAKA,” the lifestyles of residents of a public housing project (nicknamed “Gunkan Apartments”) built in prewar days are captured with a large 4x5 camera. While avoiding photographing people as much as possible, he composed photos of objects made to look as if they had been soiled with handprints. He was charmed by the apartment building so much that he finally came to realize that he had continued to visit it over a seventeen-year period and taken repeated photos of it. He put his sense of gratitude into the book and wants to hand a copy to each person involved at Gunkan Apartments. Please don’t miss this remarkable work of Yutaka Yamashita.
