-Have you received any reaction to your winning the prize?

I’ve been working as an artist for some time in the field of images, so it gave me a good opportunity to make my name known to many people.
I’ve entered New Cosmos of Photography twice in the past. As there are few limitations to participation, I can bring in a huge work like mine without difficulty. What is more, my work is considered to be more of a graphic work than a pure photographic work, but with this award, I don’t feel out of place.
The work that I entered for this competition is arranged with three large pieces side by side. First, I was anxious in case the judges would examine my work properly. I’m really happy that Boris Mikhailov paid attention to my work. I felt so relieved.

-A mysterious scene in town appears in your prize-winning work. How did you make it?

I’ve tackled that series over five years. I display those photos on my website. I’m receive many messages from inside and outside Japan each time I send a work of mine to the site. The more I process photos, the greater the responses become. I tried repeatedly to make them more interesting in different ways, and finally I understood how to make that pattern technically.
There is only one original photo to begin with. I copy it, and half of it is reversed, and while shifting its position, I put the pieces on top of each other. I try this method with various photos. Then, a startling image happens to appear now and then. While I carried on trying, I came to understand and categorize different images, such as plain patterns, aiming to get reactions, and ordinary patterns. It seems to me that there is no definite answer to what photos should be used. Anyway, there’s no other choice but to try . That’s interesting indeed.
I’m taking original photos in the city of Osaka. They are photos of scenery in which nothing special is seen. I only press the shutter when I notice something. There is no rule at all. If I took a photo assuming how it would turn out, they would all look similar. So, at the time of taking a photo, I try to take a photograph that matches my interests.
This work of mine was created about two years ago. To enter the competition, I combined three works that I had preserved. I wanted to make it a surprise that would be different from that on the website. How large the prints should be was the key to success. I wanted to be surprised at any rate. If I had a problem producing it, it was merely technical, that is, how I could make its display as large as possible.

-When did you start taking photos?

When I was a fifth grader, I tried to take photos with my parent s’ camera. When I was a student, I was a member of the cinema club, and used to make 8 mm movies. I was mostly in charge of shooting.
I studied architecture at college, and after graduating, I got a job in architectural design. So, I sometimes photograph buildings designed by well-known architects, but I find it difficult to take advantage of those buildings in my photography because they are not suitable for processing even if they look excellent as photos.

-What are your plans for the future?

I’m going to show my work at different places. What I’m thinking about is a kind of collaboration with music and images.
