Announcement on the schedule for entry applications and the judges of New Cosmos of Photography 2008(31st).

Canon Inc. today announced that the entry applications for the New Cosmos of Photography 2008 photo competition will be accepted from April 8 (Tue.) using the Web Entry Application system. Detailed information on the procedures will be announced on this web site on April 8 (Tue.).

The 2008 contest welcomes three regular judges, along with art director Ryoichi Enomoto, photographer Katsumi Omori, and artist NOGUCHI RIKA as three guest judges. Each of the six contest judges will select one entry submission to receive an Excellence award. The six award-winning works will be given the right to appear in the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition to be held this fall. This year’s Grand Prize winner will be decided at the Grand Prize selection committee meeting, which will be open to the public, to be held during the exhibition.

Canon is hoping to receive photographic works that are original, creative and go beyond conventional approaches, created by new photographers attempting to redefine the boundaries of photographic expression.

Entry information for New Cosmos of Photography 2008 (31st)

Entry qualifications
  • Entry is limited to residents of Japan, regardless of nationality, age or experience (Both professional or amateur photographers may apply.).
  • Both individuals and groups may apply. Entry by groups, however, is restricted to groups that will continue activities as a group into the future.
  • Applicants under the age of 16 must submit papers, which show the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
Entry conditions
  • Entries should be limited to original works, which have not been previously nominated or not received prize in contests. You cannot submit the same works to other photo contest.
  • Entry works must be of applicants’ own making, and applicants must retain the copyrights to their entries. Also, applicants are responsible for obtaining all necessary permissions from subjects, or for the use of artwork, films, photos or likenesses appearing in their entry works.
  • Each applicant (individual or group) may submit one entry only. There are no restrictions regarding the form that an entry takes or the number of elements that make up an entry. However, entries submitted in the form of digital data will not be accepted.
Entry application period
April 8 (Tue.), 2008 - June 11 (Wed.), 2008. Submission will be accepted up until 17:00 on the final day.
Works acceptance period
April 8 (Tue.), 2008 - June 18 (Wed.), 2008. Works postmarked or submitted to a courier service on the final day of the works acceptance period will be accepted.

Grand Prize:
  • Financial grant of JPY 1 million (including JPY 200,000 for Excellence awards).
  • Additional grant of the Canon Products of the value of JPY 1 million (including the additional grant for Excellence awards).
  • Entitlement to hold a solo exhibition at the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition (including the touring exhibitions) next year.
  • Entitlement to post the works on the top page of the issue of New Cosmos of Photography Journal in the next year.
  • All privileges extended to winners of the Excellence awards.
Excellence awards:
  • Financial grant of JPY 200,000.
  • Additional grant of the Canon Products of the value of JPY200,000.

Announcement of prize winners
Excellence and Honorable mention awards winners:

The Secretariat will directly contact Excellence and Honorable mention awards winners by July 23 (Wed.), 2008. The names of the winners will be announced on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa) by July 24 (Thu.), 2008.

A Grand Prize winner:

The Grand Prize winner will be announced at the awards ceremony of the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting. The winner will also be announced on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa).
