Announcement of the schedule for entry applications and the judges of New Cosmos of Photography 2009(32nd).
Canon Inc. today announced that the entry applications for the New Cosmos of Photography 2009 photo competition will be accepted from April 14 (Tue.) using the Web Entry Application system. Detailed information on the procedures will be announced on this web site on April 14 (Tue.).
The 2009 contest welcomes three regular judges, along with Ryoichi Enomoto, and past New Cosmos of Photography winner Mika Ninagawa as guest judges. Each of the five contest judges will select one entry submission to receive an Excellence award. The five award-winning works will be given the right to appear in the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition to be held this fall. This year’s Grand Prize winner will be decided at the Grand Prize selection committee meeting, which will be open to the public, to be held during the exhibition.
Canon is hoping to receive photographic works that are original, creative and go beyond conventional approaches, created by new photographers.
Entry information for New Cosmos of Photography 2009 (32nd)
- Entry is limited to residents of Japan, regardless of nationality, age or experience (Both professional and amateur photographers may apply.). However, it is limited to entrants who plan to continue to stay in Japan for at least two years from the date of entry.
- Both individuals and groups may apply. Entry by groups, however, is restricted to groups that will continue activities as a group into the future.
- Applicants under the age of 16 must submit papers, which show the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
- Anyone involved with Canon Group (employees etc.) may not enter.
- Entries should be limited to original works, which have not been previously nominated or not received prize in contests. You cannot submit the same works to other photo contests.
- Entry works must be of applicants’ own making, and applicants must retain the copyrights to their entries. Also, applicants are responsible for obtaining all necessary permissions from subjects, or for the use of artwork, films, photos or likenesses appearing in their entry works.
- Each applicant (individual or group) may submit one entry only. There are no restrictions regarding the form that an entry takes or the number of elements that make up an entry. However, entries submitted in the form of digital data will not be accepted.

- Entitlement to hold a solo exhibition at the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition (including the touring exhibitions) next year.
- All privileges extended to winners of the Excellence awards.
- Financial grant of JPY 200,000.
- Exhibition of their works in the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition (including touring exhibitions) this year.
- Attendance at the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting.
- Introduction of their works in the next issue of New Cosmos of Photography Magazine.
- Introduction of their works on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa).
- Financial grant of JPY 30,000.
- Exhibition of their works in the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition at Tokyo this year.
- Introduction of their works in the next issue of New Cosmos of Photography Magazine.
The Secretariat will directly contact Excellence and Honorable mention awards winners by August 7 (Fri.), 2009. The names of the winners will be announced on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa) at the same time.
The Grand Prize winner will be announced at the awards ceremony after the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting. The winner will also be announced on the New Cosmos of Photography website (canon.com/scsa).
