New Cosmos of Photography Tokyo Exhibition 2008 to open
Grand Prize selection open committee meeting to be held during the exhibition

The New Cosmos of Photography Tokyo Exhibition 2008 will present Excellence Award-winning works by six artists and Honorable Mention works by 30 artists in 28 groups, who have been selected from among 1,517 entrants in 2008 (31st competition). An exhibition of new works by co-Grand Prize winners 2007, Megumi Kurosawa, Noriko Takuma and Daisuke Nakashima, will be held concurrently.

The open committee meeting to select one Grand Prize winner from among this year’s Excellence Award winners will also be held during the exhibition. The Grand Prize selection open committee meeting, highlighted by Excellence Award winners’ presentations, will also provide a forum for exchanges with the judges, where those attending can hear their ideas on photography directly. What is more, related events held on the day when the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting is held include a talk session with Mr. Katsumi Omori and Ms. Rika Noguchi, past New Cosmos of Photography prize winners and guest judges this year.

If you would like to attend the Grand Prize selection open committee meeting and talk session with the judges, please make advanced reservations (application details will be made available on this homepage by mid-October). We hope you will take this opportunity to attend the events.

Megumi Kurosawa “Nanako”

image

Comments from the artist :
Nanako is a woman. So I do not know why he was born with the body of a man. Because of this he has lived for 68 years pretending to be a man. His wife and daughter do not know the truth either.
“I have given up on living as a woman” has got to be a lie. That is because Nanako is such a woman.

Noriko Takuma “as if”

image

Comments from the artist :
To leave a sign. Where are these signs left? Signs are better than presence. Like a heart that is stolen by a flower in full bloom, your eyes mist over, you look up to the sky and if something could change, the world would probably fall apart. It is always the same; when I am stared at I get very scared and cry like a child. It would be good if the tears that fall were a sign.

Daisuke Nakashima “neutral”

image

Comments from the artist :
When one is feeling good, or feeling pain, the expressions on one’s face are similar. When on top of the person one loves, I stand over their bodies when they are acting out those great feelings that one cannot lie to oneself, I flatten the bumps and depressions, and stare at what I am not supposed to see.
