On May 17, 2008, Canon held the "Canon Enjoy the J. League Program," as one of the company's Social Contribution Activities, at Saitama Stadium 2002, in Saitama City. This was the first time the event was held in Saitama Prefecture. Receiving cooperation from the Urawa Red Diamonds soccer team, the program invited disabled children living in the prefecture to tour the pitch, interact with the players and watch the match.
Hiroshi Ochiai, former captain of the Japan National Soccer Team and current captain of the Urawa Red Diamonds Heart-full Club, a program to contribute to the community through soccer, talked to the children about soccer. Carefully explaining the differences between soccer of the past and today, he showed them soccer balls, spiked shoes and gloves. The children greatly enjoyed his talk because he also incorporated hands-on activities, such as actually having them perform heading and lifting using a ball.
In the exchange with the players portion of the program, Urawa Red Diamonds midfielder Alessandro Santos and forward Hiroyuki Takasaki participated by socializing with the children. The team members received spirited words from the children asking them to "please be victorious in the J. League."
There was also a surprise present from the team of a uniform for one of the participating children. The winner of a game of rock-paper-scissors between the children and Alessandro Santos was presented with the uniform.
Canon employees, who volunteered by responding to an advance recruitment, provided support in the running of the program. They interacted with the children and their attendants by helping to guide them around the stadium and eating lunch with them.
