Using Light for Next-Generation Imaging Technology
Cutting-Edge Optical Technology
Terahertz light
The properties of terahertz light lie between those of light and radio waves. Terahertz light can be used to observe the inside of an opaque object owing to its transmission properties, which are similar to radio waves. It is also capable of identifying material content thanks to its spectroscopic characteristics, which are similar to light waves. Canon has been conducting research into various applications for terahertz light in addition to other types of light waves for use in sensing and imaging systems in medicine and other fields.

Nano-optical technology
Nano-optical structures allow the manipulation of optical properties without many of the restrictions imposed by existing materials. Canon is developing super-thin, high-performance mirrors based upon twodimensional photonic crystal structures, and material-independent color filters using metallic nanostructures. The company is also actively conducting research into numerical methods for analyzing nano-scale electromagnetic fields and nanostructure fabrication technologies in order to promote further innovations in Canon imaging products.
