Cameras used for television broadcasting make use of lenses with a large maximum aperture. This is because of the need to provide images that are consistently high in quality across a wide range of uses. However, it is not feasible to utilize large-aperture lenses in consumer-model video camcorders. Developers faced the challenge of creating a high-performance lens on par with professional lenses while retaining a compact size.

The aim was to provide an even higher level of image quality in response to the simple needs of users wishing to shoot beautiful video even in dark settings. Efforts to develop a high-sensitivity CMOS sensor began with the concept of efficiently collecting light by intentionally reducing the pixel count. However, development of the sensor was not the only issue, and the developers faced numerous difficulties, such as limiting power consumption and improving the performance of the image processor.
A new product completed upon overcoming various challenges and difficulties is always filled with the passion of its developers. Developers, with seemingly limitless energy and always aiming for the next level, describe their pride in the brand, saying: "Canon's strength is its ability to draw out the highest levels of performance."
