I see that you're both in Platform Technology Development Headquarters. What kind of development are you involved in?
Kumada
Well as you know, many of the products we find in markets around the world today incorporate digital technologies. Once you analyze what's in these products in terms of fundamental technologies, you notice that much of the digital technology can be shared across all kinds of products. In other words, it is possible for Canon to share and reuse digital technology throughout the company's entire range of products. Our headquarters develops these technologies, which serve as a common platform, maximizing the use of each technology.

The image-processing technology we develop is incorporated in such input devices as digital cameras and scanners, as well as in output devices, including home- and office-use printers. Product development is, of course, carried out by each respective product group.
Canon's strength lies in the company's extensive lineup of digital products encompassing both input to output devices. Taking advantage of this, we develop technologies that characterize the compatibility between all of our products, from input to output, as well as platform digital technologies that can be shared across Canon's product lineup. In these ways, we aim to deliver products that offer even greater added value.

Are you also involved in designing cameras and printers?

Although we're not directly involved in product design, we develop key technologies to be used in products three to five years from now, with a focus on high image quality and platform technologies.
