The previous models already had all what we need. The question is "Is there anything else?"

--- I'm currently using the "N676U." Takeuchi: That's our model from autumn 2001, right? The "N676U" is one of our long-selling models, and the same model is still being sold around the country. This model is the third-generation CIS model and was released after the slim 600 dpi "N636U" which boosted the CanoScan brand's popularity.--- So, one time I was asked to "rush" some photos over to a client. Since I could buy a scanner for the price of two express courier deliveries, I bought one from a nearby store, scanned in the pictures and sent them off straight away. My client was happy — "Faster than a courier, and the quality is excellent." Kurokawa: It was good that you got them to the client on time.--- Once I had finished what I needed the scanner for, I thought that I would give it back, but it was pretty handy, so I kept it around (laughs). Takeuchi: I'm glad that you liked it!--- Actually, at work I've now got a double-sided scanner with an auto-sheet feeder (ADF), and also a multi-function inkjet printer with an ADF. Inukai: You must really like scanners! We get those kinds of people sometimes. (laughs)--- But the one we use the most is the "N676U." I think because you can run it off via a single USB cable connection . Kurokawa: We also think that is one of its best features.--- Yes, you're right there. I mean, you don't want to leave a machine that you only use occasionally plugged in all the time, but it's also a hassle having to plug in both the power cord and control cord each time you want to use it. Just plugging in the USB cable and having everything ready to go seems so natural. I think this is probably the function that I value the most. Kurokawa: It was definitely worth all the hard work we put into that function.--- Also, recently you've put out a new version of the utility software that comes with the scanner, haven't you? Once I updated my drivers and installed the software, I was able to "create multi—page PDFs," something that I couldn't do before. If you can suddenly do something completely new—years after you bought the product—you really feel like you've got something for free. Kobayashi: If you check our web site regularly, you're likely to find something that you like! (laughs)--- So as you can see, I am very happy with my "N676U." Kurokawa: Thank you very much. I think you might be saying too many good things about us and our products though...--- So, what I'd like to ask is what everyone has been working on since releasing the "N676U"? Takeuchi: Such as?--- Well, I had a look at the specs for the "LiDE 500F." The max resolution is up to 2400 dpi, and it can now transfer at the fast speeds of "USB 2.0." But I get the feeling that its specs are too good for a general use scanner, and that the scanner I have is more than enough...

Comparison between Inline Color CIS (Contact Image Sensor) and CCD

When scanning at 2400 dpi, each pixel in the image matches one element in the sensor. Compact sensors make high resolution scanning possible.

Takeuchi: Ah now I see. It seems that you know a lot about scanners from a user's perspective, but there are some fundamental concepts that I think you may be mixed up about. Rather than answer your questions here today, I'm going to ask you to let me persuade you why we have worked so hard to make these advances in our products.--- OK, that would be great.
