What is Nanotechnology? - Overcoming the limitations of optics - near-field optical technologies

Mini-interview: "Nanotech is ultra-niche technology."

"I think that the various technologies that come under the nanotechnology umbrella share the feature of being able to do great things in a specific corner of a certain field, rather than being applicable to various fields. For example, carbon nanotubes are generating a lot of buzz, and I think they'll give rise to some amazing advances in the field of high function materials, but can they perform a role in other fields? It's basically for such reasons that I see nanotech as ultra-niche technology. While there are fields of nanotechnology that are the perfect match for achieving a certain objective, there are many fields which are of no use, and so — and this could almost be called the Canon way — rather than pursuing anything and everything under the nanotech label, we focus all out on the nanotech fields that best suit our capabilities and our goals."
